Meet our landowners
Meet Jonathan, a fourth-generation sheep and cattle farmer, who runs his family farm in Mid Wales alongside an expanding catering business. Two years ago, we worked with Jonathan to fence off 42,500 Sqm of mature woodland on his farm, allowing the wood to regenerate and making herding sheep easier.
Jonathan has always cared deeply about the natural world and plants trees every winter to encourage pollinators. Inspired by an episode of Clarkson’s Farm and equipped with knowledge passed down from his uncle, he took it upon himself to conduct a bird survey and successfully recorded over seventy different bird species over several months. Recordings were made by sight and with an App and most encounters on summer mornings while up early working with the cows.
The list includes species that use a wide variety of habitats such as hedgerows, open farmland, heathland, woodland and rivers. Linnet, Yellow hammer, Stonechat, Kingfisher, Woodcock, Curlew and Tawny Owl to name a few.
Far Hall is a normal working farm in the Welsh hills that has expanded over the years to keep up with demand but managed to maintain a traditional feel and continued to support an array of wildlife. In a time of polarised opinions, anger and blame, positivity can be found in the middle ground and with people like Jonathan, quietly working hard every day to run a business whilst appreciating the natural world it surrounds and looking for ways to encourage and protect it.
