About

This project comprises two broad leaf woodlands, a small stream, grazing pasture and a solitary oak.

Flanked on either side by common ground, this area already supports biodiversity with its mosaic of habitats.

We hope to transform this beautiful place into somewhere even better for nature.

Our Work

The very first stage of this project was to site a Barn Owl Box to the Oak that stands in the middle of the field. Barn Owl’s aren’t woodland birds and prefer lone trees or buildings to nest in. They also don’t build their own nests so need a level or dipped surface to lay their eggs on. This Oak, surrounded by grazing pasture provides the perfect hunting ground.

The next stage was to work with a local fencing contractor to fence off the two areas of woodland- protecting them from over-grazing- and create the line of double fencing needed for the future hedgerow. A total of 751.5 meters of fencing with gates, rails and tree cutting was required at this project!

Looking to the future…

The final stage will be to plant a species rich, traditional hedgrow across the middle of the field, acting as a corridor for between the two woodlands and providing a new, different habitat for a range of species. The hedgerow will also help provide shelter and foraging and increase infiltration from the hillside.
